The sound of metal-on-metal. Edges carving through snow. Polyurethane wheels smacking on Skatelite ramps. Freewheels spinning and high-fives slapping. These were the sounds of Summer Camp Week 5 at Woodward Copper! While freeski and snowboard summer campers found their favorite lines up in the terrain park, visiting pros Brad McClain (skateboard) and Mat Olson (BMX) turned up the heat in the skate and bike parks at Woodward Copper, Frisco and Leadville.

Powell-Peralta and Bones team rider Brad McClain was a one-man wrecking crew during his week at Woodward Copper. One of the best transition skaters in the game, Brad was perfectly at home in the Barn Bowl at Woodward and the smooth concrete of Leadville Skatepark. The fact that McClain would be competing in the X-Games only one week after leaving camp didn’t stop him from giving 100% in every session, keeping the skateboard campers inspired and frothing to learn their next tricks. We’ll be cheering for Brad in the Skateboard Park Finals on July 16th at X-Games Minneapolis!

Not to be outdone by his four-wheeled brethren, visiting BMX pro Mat Olson showed up in his beautiful VW van on a mission to shred hard. Mat has a super positive personality and was bringing the good energy into BMX camp all week long. Whether in Woodward Copper’s BMX Park, at The Barn or on the dirt jumps in Frisco Bike Park, Mat was going huge all week long too. Equally impressive as Mat’s big tricks and smooth style was his ability to take a slam and get back up smiling. Several big slams had everyone holding their breath until, inevitably, Mat would get up with a smile full of dirt and a joke to make the crew laugh. This commitment and perseverance was a great lesson for the campers to learn, although we recommend you practice (a lot) before attempting Mat’s full bag of tricks.

Up on snow at Pipeline Park, freeski and snowboard camp staff were having a blast coaching their campers through new tricks and progressions. Campers have been enjoying unique and creative setups in the terrain park, with Woodward Park Crew tweaking and adjusting the park setup each week to keep things fresh and fun. Several off-duty Woodward staff members took advantage of the great summertime snow conditions to demonstrate some of their best moves for campers.
